The term "estate" when used in the estate planning context refers to those assets a person owns including real estate, bank accounts, stocks and bonds, mutual funds, stock options, cash, furniture, jewelry, art, and other personal items. An estate also includes your equity interests in a business, life insurance and IRA, 401(k)'s, 457's, land contracts, pension benefits,; any debts; and any legal claims you may have. These assets may be in the person's name alone, but can also include interests in trusts, partnerships, and jointly owned property.
